What is surrogacy?

«Surrogacy» is a method of infertility treatment when a woman agrees to bear and give birth to a child that is not genetically related to her.

Conception of a child is carried out using assisted in vitro fertilization (IVF) technology. In this case, the germ cells of biological parents (or donor germ cells) are used.
According to the laws of the Russian Federation, a surrogate mother cannot have a genetic relationship with a child. Therefore, the Surrogate Mother does not have the right to be a donor of oocytes in this program.

A candidate for participation in the surrogacy program must have certain qualities, namely:

  • applicant must be suitable age: 20 to 35 years old;
  • have at least one naturally born child of your own;
  • rh positive factor;
  • no history of Caesarian operation;
  • good physical and mental health;
  • no criminal records.

Program steps

Step 1 / Initial Consultation

At the initial consultation, Genetic Parents get acquainted with more details about the Center’s programs. They also have a small sightseeing tour of the Clinic.

Step 2 / Conclusion of the Agreement

After choosing a program with Genetic Parents, an Agreement is concluded and the Center provides a Candidate for the role of a Surrogate Mother.

Step 3 / Follow-up Medical Examination

Before joining the program, the Candidate must once again undergo a follow-up medical examination according to the requirements of the Order of the Russian Ministry of Health No. 107n of 08/30/2012 in the laboratory LABORATORY DD LLC. The examination and analysis of the results is organized by the Center. Based on the satisfactory results of the analysis, which are shared with the Genetic Parents, the Candidacy of the Surrogate Mother is considered Approved.

Step 4 / Signing of a Contract with a Surrogate Mother

The Center, on its own behalf (or on behalf of the Genetic Parents), forms a personalized agreement on substitutionary carrying of a pregnancy with a Surrogate Mother.

Step 5 / Preparing a Surrogate Mother for Transfer

Based on the results of the examinations, the fertility doctor prescribes special drugs to prepare for the embryo transfer.

Step 6 / Embryo Transfer

On the day appointed by the fertility specialist, the embryos are transferred into the uterine cavity of the Surrogate Mother. Furthermore, in the sixth medical week, pregnancy is confirmed using ultrasound.

Step 7 / Surrogate Mother Prenatal Care

During the entire period of pregnancy, the Surrogate Mother lives in a specialized apartment in St. Petersburg. An employee of the Center is allocated to each Surrogate Mother — a curator who constantly monitors the compliance by the Surrogate Mother with the established regimen and prescriptions of doctors, proper nutrition, and organization of everyday life and leisure. The Surrogate Mother undergoes all the necessary examinations from specialized doctors, and is provided with all necessary medications.

Step 8 / Registration of Documents for the Child After Birth

After the birth of the child, the Center organizes the registration of the Surrogate Mother’s notarial Consent to register the Genetic Parents as parents of the child born by a Surrogate Mother (in accordance with paragraph 4 of Article 51 of the Family Code of the Russian Federation), including a statement by the Surrogate Mother that she has no claims against the Genetic Parents.

In the Russian Federation, surrogacy is allowed by law. It is regulated by Federal law, the Family Code and a number of bylaws.

The main document in the surrogacy program by law is an agreement concluded between the Genetic Parents and the Surrogate Mother. This agreement fixes the socio-medical and legal interests of the Parties related to conception, pregnancy, childbirth and the transfer of the child to the Genetic Parents.

What are the differences between a regular and a surrogate pregnancy?

How does the embryo transfer of a surrogate mother take place?

A surrogate mother who is physically ready for pregnancy is implanted with a ready-made embryo. This process is called «transfer of the embryo into the uterine cavity», it takes place within the walls of a medical institution under the supervision of an embryologist and reproductive specialist. The procedure lasts 20 minutes and is completely painless.

Where does the Surrogate Mother live after moving to St. Petersburg?

Our Center considers it obligatory that Surrogate Mothers live in St. Petersburg, so that they receive timely and professional medical care during pregnancy and childbirth. We are also sure that comfortable living in a specialized apartment for our Surrogate Mothers is an opportunity to feel calm and under the protection of the Center. All apartments are fully equipped for living — they have bed linen, all necessary appliances, and wireless internet. A surrogate mother only needs to take clothes with her, and when her tummy begins to grow and the shape of her body changes, our Center pays the Surrogate Mother 25,000 rubles for the purchase of special clothing and compression knitwear for pregnant women.

Can a Surrogate Mother accommodate relatives during pregnancy?

We can offer our Surrogate Mothers accommodation with one of their children. Accommodation of other relatives in an apartment for surrogate mothers is excluded, as this may create an unfavorable atmosphere for other Surrogate Mothers.

Can biological parents require a surrogate mother to fulfill certain conditions?

No, Genetic (Biological) Parents cannot put forward any conditions to the Surrogate Mother. All the conditions that a surrogate mother must comply with are spelled out in our contract. For our part, we ensure that these conditions do not contradict common sense, morality and ethics, or moral considerations. We respect our Surrogate Mothers and make their stay in the Program as comfortable as possible, both physically and emotionally.

At whose expense does a Surrogate Mother eat and purchase the necessary medications?

Each Surrogate Mother is entitled to a monthly payment of 30,000 rubles for improved nutrition, and the necessary medicines are bought and provided by our Center.

What are the potential complications of surrogate pregnancy?

According to the terms of the Program, a Surrogate Mother must be the mother of at least one of her own children. And this is not an accidental measure — Surrogate Mothers need to understand how pregnancy proceeds in order to know what to expect from their bodies during this period. Otherwise, all complications are not related to the fact that pregnancy occurred through the IVF procedure.

Is sexual intercourse allowed during pregnancy for a Surrogate Mother?

After the Surrogate Mother has passed all the tests necessary for joining the program, sexual intercourse must be excluded, since there is a risk of sexual transmission of infections and gynecological diseases, and this can threaten the pregnancy progression and the health of the child. Also, contractions of the uterus during intercourse can cause miscarriage or premature labor. In order to bear and give birth to a healthy baby, we need to think about the possible consequences of sexual contact that threaten the entire Program as a whole, and all the efforts spent on the birth of a new life. The Surrogate Mother is responsible for following this rule.

Can genetic parents abandon a child born by a surrogate mother?

Surrender of the child is very unlikely. But in a situation when a child is deprived of his legal parents for any reason, the Russian Federation takes care of such a child and the child is sent to the Baby House. Since, legally, a surrogate mother is not the parent and official guardian of the child, after giving birth she is not responsible for the child who is born. Immediately after birth, the child is transferred to legal guardians (the Genetic Parents or the state).
